Nadim Choufi’s research focuses primarily on the relationship between human beings, science and technology, and their effect on our bodies and feelings. His films and installations, often articulated in space and time, recount possible futures and reflect on how emotions and desire can find a place in an ever more coldly efficient world and how they are changed by it. For example, the video The Sky Oscillates between Eternity and Its Immediate Consequences (2021) explores life in ‘smart cities’, their closed loops and the promise of being untouched by health issues and climate crises. The two protagonists recount how control, isolation and exploitation form the foundations of these futuristic cities.
Commissioned in 2020 by Darat Al Funun, A Future Perfect [sic] Life – on view at Pontives – began as a lecture performance and was then transformed into a video in the wake of the pandemic. In the video, the artist superimposes diverse images, from scientific illustrations to ads from YouTube chat screenshots to nature documentaries and 3D videogames, so as to question the future of humanity and the environment in a capitalist and economy-driven system.
