Markus Vallazza explored classical and contemporary works of literature through drawings and engravings throughout his life. After his studies in Florence, he spent long periods in Paris, Rome, Salzburg and Berlin. From 1985, he then lived in Vienna and Bolzano. His cycles originated as free, boldly associative images based on literary models and texts. In addition to his exploration of figures such as Casanova, Don Quixote and Dante Alighieri, Vallazza focused at length on the heroines of Dolomite legends and in particular those of the Fanes.
The legendary Osteria Traube, in the centre of Ortisei, was the place where Vallazza would meet with friends every evening during his stays in Val Gardena. On the occasion of Biennale Gherdëina 9, this venue serves as the exhibition space for a series of works on paper in ink and red chalk created by the artist in 1992 to illustrate the book Le donne di Fanis (The women of Fanis) by the writer Anita Pichler. Vallazza’s visual imagery reinterprets the mythical female figures of the Fanes and their connection with the marmots. In her book, Anita Pichler reworks the narrative tradition of these legends, telling them from a new perspective thanks to the collaboration with the scholar Ulrike Kindl. The exhibition design at Osteria Traube was entrusted to the renowned South-Tyrolean designer Martino Gamper. Working at the intersection of art and design, with a special interest in social and narrative aspects, Gamper combines stories of materials, techniques, people and places in his work. (S.G.)
